Ecclesiastes 1:2 The Hebrew term hebel, translated vanity or vain, refers concretely to a “mist,” “vapor,” or “mere breath,” and metaphorically to something that is fleeting or elusive (with different nuances depending on the context). It appears five times in this verse and in 29 other verses in Ecclesiastes. It shall come to pass in the latter days. That the mountain of the house of the L ORD. Shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and it shall be lifted up above the hills; and peoples shall flow to it, Tools. On the other hand, the writer's title ('Teacher,' Hebrew qoheleth; see note on 1:1), his unique style of Hebrew and his attitude toward rulers (suggesting that of a subject rather than a monarch - see, e.g., 4:1-2; 5:8-9; 8:2-4; 10:20) may point to another person and a later period (see note on 1:1).
